Amy's Birthday

Once upon a time there was little girl named Amy, who lived with her mother & father in a small cottage by the country side. Amy’s father was a farmer & her mother worked as a household help. They were very poor, but lived happily with each other. Amy never used to complain about anything she was content with whatever she had. Daily in the morning she used to wash up, get ready & go to school, in school she used to pay attention to what was being taught & was a very good student. All the teachers praised Amy & she was indeed teacher’s pet. She had many friends who loved Amy a lot & amongst all Mini was her best friend, they always used to sit together, have lunch together & play together in school. After the school Amy used to return back to home, complete her homework and help her mother in household chores.

The days were passing by happily, and then one day Mini came to school wearing a beautiful dress, it was her birthday! Everybody wished her; she distributed chocolates amongst all & invited everyone for a Birthday party at her home. Amy was reluctant to go as Mini belonged to a rich family & Amy couldn’t afford an expensive gift. But Mini had made her promise that she would come & if she would not come then mini will not cut her birthday cake. Amy went home after the school with a heavy heart; she kept on thinking about what to gift Mini. Amy’s mother noticed that she was lost in thought & something was bothering her. She thought of speaking to Amy, “What happened dear? What is the matter?” Amy told her everything about the birthday party & the gift. Amy’s mother was a very smart & clever woman she said, “My dear, Mini will feel very happy if you gift her something that is created by you, so why don’t you make a beautiful birthday card for Mini & you can also give her the potted red rose plant. It will be an invaluable gift”. A beautiful smile spread across Amy’s face, she immediately sat down to create a beautiful card, and she also decorated the pot with come colourful ribbons.  In the evening she wore her best dress, took the gifts & went to Mini’s home. Mini’s home was decorated very beautifully; it was sparkling with colourful lights like the night sky. Mini was very happy to see Amy. All her friends wished Mini as she cut the cake & then gave her the gifts they had brought. Amy quietly pulled Mini away from the crowd  & gave her the gift, Mini was too excited she quickly opened the present, & took out the card & pot & exclaimed, “This is the best gift ever, Amy, you are truly my best friend!”, Amy felt very happy. All the friends played together, had fun & then returned back to their home. Amy returned back home tired, but told her mother everything about the party & how Mini liked the gift. Her mother felt happy hearing that.

The next day Amy got up to go to school, she stared at the calendar hung on the wall besides her bed & realized that her birthday was approaching & there were only two weeks left for the big day, she excitedly ran to her mother & said, “Mother, even I want to have a birthday party this time. There are only two weeks left for my birthday”, her mother couldn’t say a thing, they were very poor & could not afford all the arrangements, but she also didn’t want her daughter to get sad, so she thought for a while & said, “Dear its time for you to go to school, you will get late, we will discuss about the birthday party when you are back alright,”. At the school Amy was still thinking about the birthday party, she wanted to go home soon that day to decide about it with her mother. As soon as the school left she rushed back home. At home her mother was in thoughts all day thinking about the party, as soon as Amy came back, she asked her to sit down & said, “Amy we will have birthday party this year, but dear you have to understand a few things, we are not as rich as your friends so we cant give them any fancy return gifts, you can give them each a flower from our garden & I can prepare only a few things as snacks, is that fine dear?”, “Its ok mother I understand, I just want to invite my friends over & have fun. Oh! Thank you so much mother for saying yes”, she said & hugged her mother.

The next day she went to school & invited all her friends including Mini, everybody happily agreed to come.  Amy’s mother & father were working hard & saving money for their darling daughter’s party. One night when Amy’s mother & father put Amy to sleep, they started discussing about the money required to fulfil their daughter’s wishes, but Amy was not asleep, she was quietly listening to the conversation, she felt sad & thought to herself, “Poor mother & father, what a situation I have put them into, how can I be so selfish, they are working so hard for me…”, she got up from the bed & went & sat under a tree in the backyard &  started thinking about how to help her mother & father.  It was quite dark & late, a group of fairies were flying above in the sky, and suddenly they saw little Amy lost in thoughts, sitting under a tree.  The fairies exclaimed, “Oh! Look such a cute little girl!, but she seems to be very sad”, “What is she doing outside at this time, when its so freezing cold?”, “Lets fly down there & help the poor child, she seems nice”. All the fairies went to Amy. “Dear child what are you doing here, is something bothering you?” one of the fairy asked her. Amy looked up & saw that fairies were standing rite in front of her & talking to her, she couldn’t believe her eyes, “Oh my god!, is it real, or am I just dreaming” & she pinched herself & realized that it was real. The fairies laughed & said “It’s real dear, we saw that you are very sad so thought we could help you, please tell us what is bothering you”, Amy told them everything. Then the fairies said, “That’s not a problem at all, don’t you worry, your birthday party will be the best one, we will help you.”, “Come with us we will take you somewhere”, saying so the fairies waved their magic wand on Amy’s back & cute little fluttering wings appeared on her back. The fairies caught her hand & flew up high in the sky.

After flying for some time see saw a beautiful sparkling castle on a fluffy blue cloud, “Welcome to fairyland” said the fairies. It was the most magical place with trees laden with chocolates & not fruits, pond of hot chocolate, candies as the stones in the path & pretty fairies flying around. The fairies took her to a big room with a big closet & one of the fairies opened it, Amy could not believe her eyes as the closet had beautiful dresses, shoes & hats of all the colours & type. The fairies said, “Amy we know you are a good girl so go & pick a few dresses & all for you… go on”, Amy went running towards the closet & picked a few dresses & the fairies packed the stuff. Then they took her to another room which was filled with boxes wrapped in shining paper. “Amy pick a few boxes as they are the gifts for your birthday from us, but don’t open them now, you can open them only tomorrow on your birthday”, Amy was not a greedy girl so she chose only 3 box said “Thank you for everything!, I don’t know how to repay you but thanks a lot for helping me”, “Oh dear, you can repay us by being a good girl always, common now lets go, your mother will be worried,” said the fairies & took her back to her home. After reaching home she quickly thanked them all again & said goodbye & ran inside to her room. The fairies hid the presents under her bed & flew off happily. The next day Amy got up & wondered “What a beautiful dream!”, she bent down & checked under the bed & understood that it was not a dream. She called her mother, showed her the gifts & told her everything. Her mother couldn’t believe what Amy was saying, “Amy there are no such things as fairies & fairyland, I don’t understand from where have you got such expensive dresses & gifts. Has Mini gifted them to you? You should never take such things from others”, “Oh no mother, you don’t understand it was really the fairies”. “Ok then if you want me to believe, then why don’t you invite them before the party starts & your friends come.” “I will try mother…” said Amy, then she got ready, wore one of the dress which fairies had given her & went to school. At school all her friends wished her on her birthday & they loved her dress, she was indeed looking very pretty. She invited her friends for her party. When the school left she rushed back home to help her mother for the party, she suddenly remembered that her mother had asked to invite the fairies, it was just the evening time & the fairies flew around at night so she went in to the backyard & sat there. The fairies in the fairyland were quite excited about little Amy’s party so they were all looking down from the fairyland, they saw that Amy was sad & flew to her backyard. Amy felt very elated to see them all & explained them the situation. They all understood the concern of her mother & went inside with her. “Mother see I had told you right, the fairies have come, now do you believe me” said Amy & called her mother, “Oh dear you & your stories..” she couldn’t even complete her sentence as she couldn’t believe her eyes that the fairies were actually standing in front of her.  “Don’t you worry it was really us who helped Amy, we know that she is a very good girl & we dint want her to be sad”, said the fairies. Tears rolled into her mother’s eyes as she thanked the fairies profusely. “Its time for us to go, we hear your friends coming, call us whenever you need help ok”, saying so the fairies wished Amy a happy birthday & flew back to the fairyland. All her friends started pouring in; they had brought beautiful gifts for her. Her mother had baked a chocolate cake, she blew the candles & cut the cake while her friends sang the birthday song.  Then they all played together & ate the yummy snacks prepared by Amy's mother. When it was time for them to go Amy gave them all, the return gifts that the fairies had given her & thanked them for coming & bringing all the beautiful gifts.  After everybody was gone Amy went & hugged her mother & father & thanked them for organizing such a nice party, they kissed their daughter & wished her. Amy then went off to bed as it was late, she thanked the fairies & went to sleep thinking about the best birthday party ever….
